The form was made in two parts: one from a refractory clay
only, the other from a special body prepared by mixing pieces of
lignite coal and adding it to the clay to create a from without
losing the texture of the coal. This was very fragile but made
strong enough to handle by dipping it into clay slip and a little
glaze (for strength after firing) and leaving it to set. At this
stage it could be modeled into shape and joined with the first
part. The work was then biscuit fired to
1080℃/1976℉, and decorated where required with
glaze and glass cullet (a colored glass sold in small lump form).
The final firing was done by placing the work in the firebox of
the solid fuel kiln and firing to approximately 1080℃/1976℉. |
