In the early years, I started my ceramic art with the traditional Yixing teapots as such a culture and art of teapot is unique and independent in the ceramic art of China, which has found no partners in any other country. In the ceramic art history of the world, no other teapot culture is more profound than the tradition of Yixing, which has been existing for over 500 years. Even in the development of contemporary ceramic art today, it has had a rapid influence on every region. The refined way of working can never be easily created by any otters without being well-trained and , what is more, it is a great challenge for all the ceramists with high aspirations and determination.
Gradual transformations took place in my conceptions concerning the contemporary ceramic art when I was on traveling lectures and chaired workshops in the United States. As I became acquainted with many of new styles in the contemporary ceramic art activities in the United states and unconsciously receives various influences while meeting with lots of ceramic art masters who became my friends later, my works began to take a new look by evolving from the traditions. However, I carefully retained the Chinese features in my works, I always hope that it will be quite easy for people to find that my works are made by China wherever they are exhibited.
In the contemporary ceramic art history of the West, my material realistic style has been regarded as "Trompe I' oeil". However, I have not only demonstrated my techniques and ability to work in a realistic way ,but also highlighted the cultural background in a sculpture language in all of my works, e.g. the large trunk-like teapots. Though they retain their functions as teapots, they are really" sculptures with the expressions of teapots". What is more, the giant ceramic sculpture, i.e. the 20-meter long bridge, has compromised all of my styles including material realism in ceramic art , installations, super-realism, the philosophy in the Chinese ceramic art, the cultural traditions of China and more others.
