David Roberts

• Born in  Sheffield, English in 1947, David lives and has his studio in the Yorkshire Pennine  mill town of Holmfirth in the North of England. He enjoys a wide reputation for his distinctive ceramics. Initially simple, monumental vessels these ceramics exhibit a concern with the hollow, volumetric qualities of hand built pos together with a fascination for , and control over, surface incident arising from the raku process. Some ten years ago these glazed surfaces were abandoned in order to explore the possibilities of the interaction of smoke marking on the clay body itself. The resulting work is strongly evocative of David's  increasing engagement with both his local landscape and a renewed interest in post war abstract painting.

    He Studied his art teaching degree at Bretton Hall College, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England from 1966 to 1970.

  TEACHING

    He taught ceramics in local high school for ten years.
    associate lectureship at Batley School of Art, West Yorkshire from 1981 to 2000.
　

   He was invited onto the British Crafts Council Selected Index in 1986 and in 2000 was elected as a member of the international Academy of ceramics.
   He is a fellow of the Crafts Potters Association of Great Britain and in the mid 1980s was chair of the association for three years.
   He is one of the first British ceramists to specialize in hih contemporary raku.
